Police fire teargas shells to disperse demonstrators
Srinagar, Sep 7 (UNI) Police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators, protesting against the death of a youth in police firing in the downtown yesterday.
Official sources said people, mostly youth, took to the streets at Budshah chowk and started raising ''pro-freedom slogans.'' They were, however, joined by others and started march towards the historic Lal Chowk, the nervecentre of the summer capital.
Police and security forces, deployed on strength, tried to stop them resulting clash between them.
The agitators later pelted stones at security forces. Police fired several teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse them.
Additional security forces were rushed to the area and the situation was brought under control.
Situation elsewhere in the city was by and large peaceful, sources said.
