UPA govt committed to goal of education for all: PM
Chennai/Salem, Sep 5 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the UPA government at the Centre was committed to the goal of access for education to all sections of the society.
Speaking after receiving the Honorary Doctorate at a special convocation of the 150th year of the Madras University here, he said the government had launched a new phase in the educational empowerment of people.
''Our focus is not just on a quantitative expansion of edcuational opportunities, but also on qualitative improvement,'' he underlined.
Dr Singh also spoke on the need for providing special attention to education of girl child and women's education.
He said steps should be taken to facilitate the reverse flow of global Indian talent resident abroad into India's knowledge institutions.
In his speech at another programme to inaugurate Corporate Apollo Hospitals' of taking healthcare to semi urban and urban areas through 'Reach Hospitals,' Dr Singh said the National Rural Health Mission launched by the UPA regime had been yielding good results and this must be consolidated.
''My government has tried to address the serious deficiencies in the rural public health system through the mission,'' he noted.
