Situation in Raichur tense but under control

Raichur, Karnataka, Sep 4 (UNI) The situation in this North Karnataka town, which witnessed a bandh to protest last night's incidents in which some Ganesh pandals were burnt followed by clashes, remained tense but under control.

Police said Section 144 of the CrPC had been imposed in the city after clashes broke out between two groups following the torching of three Ganesh pandals.

Some miscreants had set the pandals afire at Super Market, Marvadi Road and Station Road last night.

As news spread, hundreds of youth came on streets and started pelting stones on passing vehicles. While some buses were damaged in stone pelting, four two wheelers were burnt by the agitators.

To protest the incidents, some organisations had given a bandh call in the city which was total.

While the agitators took out the rally, some miscreants pelted stones at the opposite group in which ten people were injured.

Then police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the clashing mobs in which about 20 people were injured.

The situation in the town is tense but under control, police said.

Additional police forces had been deployed in the town to maintain law and order. No arrests had been made so far, police added.
