Nagaland: Mokokchung bandh on women quota

Kohima, Sep 2: Irked with the state government's decision to reserve 33 percent seats for women in Mokokchung municipal election scheduled for October 16, the male folk has called for a dawn to dusk bandh on Thursday.

A meeting of Ward Chairmen, Gaon Burahs, Mokokchung based tribal organizations, representatives of Ao union and leaders of the six Ao ranges held in Mokokchung yesterday which resolved to observe the bandh to protest against the governments decision to implement 33 percent women reservation in all Municipal and Town council elections in Nagaland.

It was also decided in the meeting not to accept the Municipal Act on land and house taxes.

The speakers regretted that instead of amending the Act in public interest, the government has further imposed an unacceptable reservation policy.

The meeting further resolved that till the government amends all the unacceptable imposition, the citizens of Mokokchung would not allow the municipal elections to take place.
