Kundapura, Aug 31 (UNI) Karnataka Minister for Home Dr V S Acharya today said that with the high literacy rate achieved in Daxina Kannada and Udupi District, the infant mortality ratio was at a minimum level of Eight per cent and 6 per cent respectively in the entire state and any other developed nation.

Participating as the chief guest at the inauguration of new building of the ' R N Shetty P U College' of the Coondapur Education Trust here, he said that the state average literacy ratio was 49 per cent while in the Seven backward States like Bihar it was as high as 79 per cent.

He said that according to a survey conducted on Human Development Index (HDI) in rural areas in all 27 districts in the state, the two districts were also in the forefront among all other districts in terms of health and education parameters.

Dr Acharya said that these achievements could be made possible in these two districts mainly due to the valuable contributions made in the education sector by the Christian missionaries and the private initiatives taken up by institutions like Sri Kshetra Manjunatheshwar Education Trust, NITTE Education Trust and great men like R N Shetty. These high standard achievements need to be maintained in future also.
