Punjab: Beant Singh remembered on martyrdom day
Chandigarh, Aug 31: An all prayer meeting was held at the memorial of former Punjab Chief Minister, the late Beant Singh, to commemorate his 14th martyrdom day on Sunday, Aug 31.
Mr Beant Singh had paid the price for restoring peace in the terror hit state of Punjab by sacrificing his life on this day in 1995 when he was killed in a bomb attack by terrorists , in front of the Punjab Civil Secretariat here.
The prayer meeting was attended by thousands of followers of the late chief minister and believers of his ideology, besides leaders belonging to various political parties.
Close associates of the former chief minister expressed anguish over the delay in the completion of the memorial here.
Those who paid tributes to the Mr Beant Singh, included his widow, Jaswant Kaur, the Working President of Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee Mohider Singh Kaypee, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Rajinder Kaur Bhathal, Union Minister of State for Finance Pawan Bansal and a number of Congress former and present MPs and MLAs.
A booklet authored by advocate Harpreet Sandhu, a former additional Advocate General of Punjab, on the life and philosophy of Beant Singh was also released on this occasion.
