Nine farmers commits suicide in Vidarbha

{image-farmers suicide_31082008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Nagpur, Aug 31: At least nine farmers committed suicide in the last two days in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working among farmers said on Sunday, Aug 31.

According to VJAS, the nine farmers who took the extreme step included three from Yavatmal district, two each from Buldhana and Chandrapur districts, and one each from Amravati and Nagpur districts. Of them, two from Yavatmal district and one each from Nagpur and Chandrapur districts - ended their lives on Saturday, Aug 30 the day of the 'Pola,' the most important festival for farmers, a VJAS press release said.

Meanwhile, VJAS has sent a memorandum to Congress President Sonia Gandhi highlighting the plight of the farmers, the release added.
