Lankan fishermen awarded imprisonment for poaching
Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, Aug 28 (UNI) A lower court here today handed down 12-week imprisonment to 28 Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested for poaching in Indian waters recently.
Pronouncing the judgement,Ramanathapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Ravi ordered the fishermen to undergo 12 weeks imprisonment. He also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 each on crew members of six Sri Lankan-registered fishing vessels.
Police made tight security arrangements in and around the CJM Court Complex in view of the judgement.Later, they were lodged in Madurai Central Prison.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) detained the fishermen along with six mechanized fishing trawlers for illegal poaching in Indian waters off Kanyakumari Coast on June 20, last.
