US-based NRI adopts a rhino

Guwahati, August 26, 2008 : A US-based NRI Vavani Sharma has adopted a rhino named 'Pori' at a zoo in Assam and has made an advance payment of 100,000 rupees. This adoption allows him to take care of the six-year-old female rhino for the next one year. The Assam government started an adoption programme way back in 2005 to promote protection of the endangered species and also to reduce the Forest Department's financial burden in managing the zoos.
