Welfare Board for fishermen sought
Puducherry, Aug 26(UNI) PMK state unit Secretary and Parliamentary party leader Prof M Ramadass today urged the administration to set up a fishermen welfare Board in the Union Territory .
In a statement here he said the territorial administration should take note of the fact that the third biggest community in the Union Territory was suffering socially and economically, and hence, a Fishermen Welfare Board should be set up to ensure the progress in the lives of fishermen. Forty five km of the Union Territory was a coastal area and 45,000 people were engaged in this profession.
The revenue to the government through fishing was increasing every year. But the lives of fishermen did not see any development, he said.
He said the 2004 tsunami had affected the fishermen community very much and the houses to be constructed by the administration, with assistance from the Centre and other external agencies were yet to be constructed.
