TN Govt announces solatium of Rs 5 lakh

Chennai, Aug 25 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today announced solatium for all those who lost eyesight after they underwent cataract surgery at a private hospital in Perambalur last month.

and now undergoing treatment at Joseph Hospital in Tiruchirapalli.

Moved by the plights of the people, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced a solatium of Rs five lakh each to those who had lost sight in both eyes and Rs one lakh each to those who lost sight in one eye.

The Chief Minister had announced Rs five lakh each to 20 people, amounting to Rs one crore this morning, but revised the compensation in the evening, following reports that many of them suffered eyesight malfuncation only in one eye.

The compensation would be personally handed-over to the victims by a State Minister, an official release here said.
