6 policemen booked for custodial death

Nagpur, Aug 24 (UNI) Six policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, have been booked for the alleged custodial death of an accused in Amravati district in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

An offence was registered against Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) P V Mate, police constables -- Sahebrao Thaware, Mahendra S Thakur, Vasant Karai, Vijay Chakre and Sharad Shirbhate, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), after the death of Anil Suryavanshi (30) late on Friday night, Amravati district Superintendent of Police (SP) C H Stalin said.

Earlier, Suryavanshi had been arrested along with two others after they were caught gambling in Nandgaon Khandeshwar in the district, he said. The earlier police version said Suryavanshi died while on the way to hospital after he fell ill. However, it was alleged that Suryavanshi died due to torture by police in custody.

The inquiry in this case has been handed over to CID.
