We want the 'aam aadmi' Nano car to come: Congress
New Delhi, Aug 22: The Congress on Friday, Aug 22 blamed the Left government in West Bengal for the farmers' agitation against the Tata Motors' Nano car project, and said there was lack of transparency in land acquisition by the state government. ''It is an aam aadmi (common man) car and we want Nano car to come. But land acquisition by the state government is not transparent. That is why the farmers are agitating,'' AICC Spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told mediapersons, while reacting to the threat by the Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata to pull out the small car manufacturing project from Singur.
He said such a project should be set up through consensus and after giving adequate compensation to the farmers.
Referring to the support of the local Congress unit to the agitation in Singur, Mr Ahmed said, ''the Congress is giving voice to the concerns of farmers who are affected by the acquisition.'' In this context, he said ''it is the duty of all political parties to work in favour of the common people and farmers who are agitating for genuine demands. It is for all parties to agitate with them and work for their betterment.''
