Stir against delay in milk co-op elections
Puducherry, Aug 21: A group of people from Koonichampet village near here led by a Youth Congress activist Srinivasamurthy today held a dharna inside the PCC(I) office and a demonstration infront of the office of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies(RCS) to protest the indefinite postponement of the elections to the Koonichampet Cooperative Milk Producers union.
According to Mr Srinivasamurthy, elections to the union were due once in three years and the term of the present directors expired on June 30, this year. As construction of a building was on, the directors had sought extension. Following this, three months extension was given to them by the RCS. However, after completion of two months, RCS had announced the elections scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, Aug 21. All preparations were made and nominations filed.
Out of nine directors, four were elected unopposed.
Meanwhile, the RCS through a notice last night, postponed the elections indefinitely citing law and order problems. Angry over this, the mob from the village resorted to the agitations. They also called on the senior superintendent of police and submitted a memorandum seeking action against rural SP Mohanraj who gave a false certtificate of law and order problem before dispersing.
