Pondy CM inaugurates new jail complex
Puducherry, Aug 20 (UNI) Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy today declared open the Rs 12-crore new jail complex built at a 35 acre site at Kalapat near here.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that it was estimated that the jail complex require Rs 15 crore more for it's expansion, which would be sanctioned soon.
The present jail on the Nehru street, constructed by the French in 3000 sq ft lacked facilities for the prisoners and security personnel. The new complex had all the facilities for the prisoners including a library, he added.
Mr Rangasmay said the administration would ensure that the library at the jail had good books since reading of knowlegable books would lead to good thinking and in turn help to change the mindset of prisoners.
Stating that his desire was reduction in the number of crimes and criminals here, the Chief Minister said the new jail complex should be a reformation unit to the prisoners.
PMK parliamentary party leader Prof M Ramadass, Puducherry judge Kaliyamurthy, DGP Khan, IG Prisons Vasudeva Rao and Ozhukarai municipal chairman N S J Jayabal, among others, participated in the function.
