PM Assures Action to help De-Notified Tribes

New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) The commission for De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes has recommended setting up of a permanent commission on the lines of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and prevention of harassment of de-notified nomadic tribes by police among others.

The recommendations were made in a report submitted by Commission Chairman B S Renake and other members when they called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and presented a copy of their final report to him.

Dr Singh assured the commission that expeditious action would be taken to implement the recommendations made.

Earlier, the commission had handed over its final report to Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar on July 2.

The panel, which began its work in February 2006, was constituted to study the socio-economic conditions of the de-notified, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes and recommend measures for their upliftment.

The commission had submitted its interim recommendations to the ministry on May 31, 2007.

Apprising the Prime Minister about the report's proposals, the Commission Chairman said they broadly related to the provision for their housing, education and skill development.
