Yamuna flows above danger mark, people in low-lying areas evacuated
New Delhi, Aug 18 (UNI) Scores of people living in low lying areas of the capital here today evacuated to safer places as the river Yamuna was flowing at 205.69 m , close to one metre above the danger mark.
The rise in the water level has been due to the release of water by Haryana from the Hathni Kund barrage, the flood control department said.
''It is likely to rise to 205.8 m in the next six hours,'' the Department said.
The swollen river has flooded several fields along the river bed and a number of jhuggis were inundated due to the rising waters.
A government spokesman said a warning had been issued to the people living in low lying areas like Usmanpur, Garhi mandu, Nigambodh ghat, Chilla village, Batla house.
They had been asked to shift to nearby school building or tents.
''All measures have been taken to ensure safety of the people and there was no reason for worry,'' he said.
