Unprecedented security arrangements for UNMO march by Kashmiris

Srinagar, Aug 18 (UNI) All roads leading to United Nations Military Observers (UNMO) office at Sonawar has been closed in view of the Coordination Committee (CC) headed by both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference, call for ''UNMO office chalo.'' However, on the request of the district administration, the CC has agreed to hold the public meeting at nearby Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) park where thousands of people from different parts of the valley are expected to participate.

A UNI correspondent who visited the area where the UNMO office is situated said, all roads around it had been closed with barbed wire.

A large number of security forces holding automatic weapons and also lathis have been deployed in the area to foil any attempt by people to reach there.

However, the CC has said after the public meeting a group of senior leaders will present a memorandum to UNMO officials.

No vehicle, including pedestrians were being from Rammunshi Bagh crossing. They were being asked to take stadium route to reach their destinations. Bullet proof vehicle bunkers were also seen parked in the middle of the roads around the UNMO office.

Police personnel could be seen marking the road for the direction of public meeting participants towards TRC ground where the meeting will be held now.

Security forces in strength were also seen deployed near Exhibition, Rambagh, Exchange road and civil lines.

The CC, an alliance of both the factions of the HC and other organisations, spearheading the present agitation against alleged economic blockade and attack on Kashmiri drivers and people in Jammu decided that a public rally will be held at TRC ground instead at UNMO office.

It was also decided that only senior leaders will later go to UNMO office in a procession to present a memorandum to officials there.
