NSS volunteers embark on march

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 15 (UNI) Sixty-four volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of a local college in the city left on a 200-km march to Vedaranyam for socio-religious harmony yesterday.

They will cover Grand Anaicut, Tirukattupalli, Tiruvaiyaru, Palli Agraharam,Thanjavur, Poondi, Needamangalam, Mannarkudi, Tiruthuraipoondi and Karuppanpulam -- the Salt Sathyagraha route trodden by Congress workers and leaders.

The march similar to the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha 'padayatra' was aimed at exposing the students to the importance and impact on the freedom movement in this part of the State.

They will reach Vedaranyam on August 20 and the march will culminate with felicitations by Freedom Fighters, Former MP P V Rajendran and A Vedaratnam, grandson of Former Sardar Vedaratnam Pillai.

The NSS volunteers will observe 'Sathbavana Divas,' the birth anniversary of Former Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
