{image-sewage worker_15082008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Mumbai, Aug 15: Sewage workers employed with the Brihan-Mumbai (Greater Mumbai) Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Thursday, Aug 14 staged a unique protest over the lack of gumboots and proper working conditions. The workers demanded that they should be provided adequate and quality equipment for better and safe working as they are faced with many ailments without proper gear.
"Our slogan for the protest is that either give us shoes or take them from us. We are asking for protective gear shoes. If you are not going to give us then all the workers have collected sandals, shoes from garbage and we are going to present it to Additional Municipal Commissioner R.A. Rajiv, who happens to be the head of the solid waste department under whom these workers are working," said Milind Ranade, a BMC official.
According to the workers, they keep Mumbai's streets and other places clean with no special footwear or gloves or umbrella despite BMC's campaign against leptospirosis.
