TN Guv, CM, leaders greet people on I-Day

Chennai, Aug 14 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and leaders of various political parties in the state, today greeted the people of the country on the eve of Independence day.

The Governor, in his message, called for efforts to uproot terrorism, which he described as an act of cowardice and wreaked brutality on the innocent people.

''While the State and the Central Government are fighting against this menace, it requires public vigil and support to uproot terrorism,'' he said.

''Independence Day is an occasion to refresh our thoughts, salute and pay our homage to the great galaxy of freedom fighters, who sacrificed their lives for our nation's freedom,'' the Governor said.

Mr Karunanidhi, in his message, took pride that India, after getting Indpendence, emerged as the biggest democratic country in the world.

He said the Independence Day reminded all sections of the society to come together and preserve our indpendence, sinking the differences of caste, creed and religion.

Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa, TNCC President K V Thangabalu, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder-leader Dr S Ramadoss, CPI(M) leader N Varadarajan, CPI leader D Pandian and BJP leader L Ganesan also offered their Indpendence day greetings to the people.
