Mumbai building collapse death toll rises to 21
Mumbai, Aug 14: One more person succumbed to injuries, as the death toll in the Bhindi Bazaar building collapse incident rose to 21. Nineteen other injured are still undergoing treatment in the state-run J J Hospital, while some people were discharged after treatment, the disaster control room sources said.
A portion of the 70-year-old building, which housed around 14 families, collapsed in Bhindi Bazar area of the city yesterday. Most of the work of removal of debris has been completed, the sources added. Among the people who lost their lives in the incident, majority were women and children.
Police have filed a negligence complaint against the landlord of the building, Bharat Jain, and further investigations are on. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) repairing board had issued a danger notice to the tenants since 2006. In May, they pasted a notice announcing this at the entrance of building.
