Patriots Day observed in Manipur
Imphal, Aug 13 (UNI) The Patriots Day was observed today in Manipur to pay tribute to those who were martyred during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War.
After the end of the war, Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal were hanged to death on August 13, 1891.
The observations began at the Hicham Yaicham Pat here early this morning, where the last rites of Prince Tikendrajit were held in 1891.
A large number of people offered floral tributes at Kangla while the main function was held at the Saheed Minar here.
Devotional songs were presented by large number of artists while gun salute was given by personnel of the Manipur Rifles.
Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat said, ''It was on this day in 1891 that the great heroes of Manipur - Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Niranjan Subedar, Kajao and Chirai Naga - made supreme sacrifice on the gallows for the cause of their motherland.
''While observing the Day and paying homage and tribute to those who laid down their livess courageously, we have to follow their footprints and ideals and serve our country to make the observance of Patriots Day meaningful,'' the Governor added.
Besides, various observations were held at different places by social organisations, political parties, students bodies.
Social service and blood donation camps were also organised as part of the observations.
