7 killed, 55 injured in Mumbai building collapses

Mumbai, Aug 13 (UNI) At least seven people, including two women and as many children, were killed and 55 others injured when portions of a couple of buildings collapsed here today in separate incidents following heavy rainfall overnight.

In the first incident, at least seven people, including two women and as many children, were killed and 30 others injured when a portion of a 70-year-old three-storeyed building situated at Kumbharwada in Bhendi Bazaar area of South Central Mumbai collapsed at around 0600 hrs.

Among those killed were four members of one Narendra Chaurasia family. One person is yet to be identified.

The injured have been admitted to the J J Hospital. There were 14 families in the building, according to the sources in disaster control room of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In another incident at Byculla in South Central Mumbai, 25 students of St Anioto D'Souza High School sustained minor injuries after a portion of a roof collapsed at around 1130 hrs.

The injured students were admitted to a private hospital, the sources added.
