PIL on confusing names of electoral candidates

Kochi, Aug 12 (UNI) Kerala High Court today admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by one Sonu Augustine praying for a direction to the Election Commisision seeking adequate remedial measures to clearly distinguish each electoral candidate on the ballot paper and in EVMs.

This was necessary to ensure that voters were not deceived by deceptively similar names, the petitioner submitted.

A single Judge Mr Justice S Sirijagan issued notices to the Centre and Chief Election Commissioner on the matter.

The petitioner stated that many candidates for whom voters want to vote were defeated as they had deceptively similar names.
