Manipuris shocked over kidnapping of children by militant groups
Imphal, Aug 12 : Forcible recruitment and abduction of children by militant groups in Manipur has shocked the people of the state and all sections of the society have condemned such acts of terrorism.
Fear and a sense of insecurity are palpable in school campuses all over the state. Parents and teachers take extra precautions while escorting the children to and back from school.
"It has become very difficult for the people here. Sometimes we feel that the situation may even get worse," said Sunita, a parent.
The kidnapping of around six and seven children by some underground groups last month has sent shock waves across the whole state.
"This trend of kidnapping children has caused problems not only to the teachers but parents as well. We have to look after the students' security. Even after the recess, we have to double check if all the students are present. We have to make sure that the students are handed over to their parents safely," said Pradamani, a teacher.
Schools all across Manipur have been the target of militant groups for the last several months.
The extortion demands made by underground groups have led to the closure of many schools and curtailment of classes and courses. Many parents have even started sending their children outside the state for studies.
Premier institutes like the Navodya Vidalya have been affected badly as the children are being targeted.
"It's time for the guardians, people, teachers and the government to get together. The insurgent groups should also be there to respond to the voice of the people so that the academic atmosphere is restored," said Arun Irengbam, a journalist. SBN Binoy Singh, president of the Senior Citizen Forum said, "People of the state of Manipur should stand together to preserve our jewels. They should be secured forever till they become a good citizens of Manipur."
The state needs an expansion of its educational infrastructure. The attack on schools has endangered the growth of the younger generation.
