Gujarat lashed by heavy rains
Ahmedabad, Aug 12 (UNI) Heavy rains continued to pound Gujarat today with several low-lying areas submerged under flood waters and more than 700 people rendered homeless as waters of River Sukhi entered some areas of Jambughoda town, about 70 kms away from Godhra.
The bridge on Sukhi river was submerged by flood water and its raflings collapsed due to the heavy downpour, authorities here said.
More than 700 people have been shifted to a school and arrangements for food packets have been made by authorities.
Around 129 houses were submerged under eight feet water in Jambugodha town.
The union territory of Daman was cut off from the rest of the country due to breakdown of transport services and snapping of telecommunication links. Most of the business establishments and government offices were closed due to the heavy rains.
In Navsari, a bridge was submerged in flood waters and Umariya dam was overflowing due to incessant rains.
The picturesque Kaparada taluka in Valsad district received the highest rainfall of 327 mm in the last 24 hours.
Dharampur taluka received 230 mm rains, while Umargaon taluka 245 mm, Pardi taluka 158 mm and Valsad taluka 77 mm rainfall.
Following incessant rains, water level at Madhuban dam rose to 71 meters.
Meanwhile, the weather office has predicted heavy rains at a few places in South Gujarat, Saurashtra, Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli in the next 24 hours. Warnings have been issued in coastal areas and fishermen have been advised not to venture out.
