Suspect LTTE operatives let off after interrogation

Chennai, Aug 9 (UNI) Police today detained six Sri Lankan Tamils on suspicion that they could be operatives of the banned LTTE, but let them off after it was proved that they were innocent.

During a routine vehicle check, Thirumangalam police detained the six people, Aruldoss (29), Charles (25), Pradeepan (23), Dinesh Kumar (20), Danushan (18) and Selvam (42), when they were travelling in a Tata Sumo car last evening.

They were brought to the Thirumangalam police station on suspicion that they could be the operatives of LTTE, but interrogation proved that they had no connection with the banned outfit.

Contrary to initial reports that they were remanded to judicial custody, Deputy Commissioner of police, Anna Nagar, said the six were released after interrogation.

In a release late in the evening, he said the six were from the refugee camp in suburban Puzhal and that they were taken to Thirumangalam police station for interrogation.

Interrogation revealed that there were no adverse reports against them and they were let off, he said.
