16 killed due to heavy rains in AP

Hyderabad, Aug 9 (UNI) At least 16 people were killed and several villages in the low-lying areas inundated with heavy rains lashing several parts of Andhra Pradesh since last night.

According to official sources, the continuous downpour was caused by the low pressure, which became well-marked over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay. Seven people were killed in Hyderabad city, three in Medak district and two each in Vijayawada, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts.

The toll in rain-related incidents might go up, the sources said.

Most of the victims were killed when the walls of their houses collapsed following incessant rains.

Most of the villages on the banks of Nagavali and Vamshadhara rivers in Srikakulam district were flooded. Road and communication networks were completely damaged in several districts.

In Hyderabad, which experienced heavy rains, most of the low-lying areas were inundated by overflowing drainage water.
