New Delhi, Aug 8 (UNI) The Pondicherry-based Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute is to be a Deemed University from the day it is disaffiliated from Pondicherry University, the Human Resource Development Ministry announced today.

The announcement follows a similar notification in respect of Tamil Nadu-based Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute and Chettinad College of Nursing, albeit subject to conditions.

The Ministry said the functioning and performance of the institutions shall be reviewed annually by the University Grants Commission through expert committees and status confirmed after five years.
