MP Speaker addresses Commonwealth

Bhopal, Aug 7 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Ishwardas Rohani today stressed on further strengthening the democratic system.

Addressing a seminar -- on trustworthy election for free and impartial representation -- during the 54th Commonwealth Conference at Kuala Lumpur, he said, ''in a democracy, election is the medium for discerning public opinion.'' Official sources said here that Mr Rohani also discussed Indian democracy and the 14 general elections the country witnessed.

''The nature of Indian democracy is such that direct control over power is not in the hands of just a few persons,'' Mr Rohani added.

Several countries' representatives are at Kuala Lumpur's Convention Centre where the Conference began on August 3 and will conclude on August 10.
