Mahila Cong hopeful of SP support on Women's Reservation Bill

New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) The All India Mahila Congress Committee today expressed hope that the Samajwadi Party, the newest ally of the UPA coalition, will reconsider its stand on the Women's Reservation Bill, putting national interests ahead of all other considerations.

''Just as it has done in case of the Indo-US Nuclear deal, we hope that the SP will support 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies, keeping national interests in mind,'' he said.

The Samajwadi Party has all along opposed the bill and demanded a 'quota within quota' for women belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The SP members had even tried to snatch copies of the Bill when it was tabled in the Rajya Sabha in May last.
