Army deploys 10,000 extra soldiers in Jammu

New Delhi, August 7 : The Army is deploying around 10,000 extra soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir to keep the situation under control in the coming weeks.

Earlier today, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP's) Core Committee decided to go ahead with a three-day agitation on the Amarnath land transfer issue from August 11.

Making it clear that they would settle for nothing less than the re-allotment of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), the BJP accused the Centre of failing to broker peace over the Amarnath land row issue.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N. N. Vohra last night appointed a four-member committee for holding talks with the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS) to find a solution for the ongoing Amarnath land transfer row.

The committee comprising former state chief secretary S.S. Bloeria, Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Amitabh Mattoo, retired Judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Justice G.D. Sharma, and Chief Executive Officer of SASB B.B. Vyas will make a fresh appeal to the agitating group to end the stalemate.

Earlier, the Sangarsh Samiti had refused Vohra's proposal to hold direct talks with the shrine board.

The BJP announcement came a day after an all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had ended in New Delhi with a resolve not to recall the Governor and to send an all party team to assess the situation on ground, and the remedial action to be taken there of.

After 36-days of continued violence, the Kashmir Valley is running short of food, fuel and medical supplies.

On Wednesday, eight members of the Amarnath Shrine Board resigned to help in reconstitution of the Board.
