Teacher impaled, mob burns police van

Midnapore West, Aug 6 (UNI) A retired school teacher was killed when an iron rod, placed in a moving truck, pierced his body today.

Soon after the incident, which occurred on National Highway 60, local people blocked the road at 1230 hours.

When a police van arrived to lift the blockade angry people set it afire, injuring two policemen. The rest managed to flee and took shelter in some villagers' houses.

Later, a larger police contingent reached the spot and the blockade was lifted at 1600 hours, SDO Midnapore Ashok Saha told reporters.

Tension still prevailed, he said.
