Coimbatore hosts extraordinary numismatics exhibition
Coimbatore, Aug.6 : Over 50 participants from different parts of the country recently participated in a national numismatic exhibition which had coins dating from the first century B.C till date on display.
The exhibition also included currency notes and rare coins made of gold, silver, brass and aluminum. A couple of them dated back to fifth century B.C.
Currencies from across the world were put on display during the three-day exhibition, which concluded on August 4.
This collection belongs to Nityanandan, an avid coin collector .
He says that he started collecting coins as a hobby, and now it has become a venture of investment.
"I displayed my collection here, which includes coins that are 2,500 years old. Some of the coins belong to the first century B.C and cost 3,000 rupees.I also displayed coins of the British East India Company, Madras Presidency coins and a Pagoda gold coin valued at Rupees 15,000," said Nityanandan.
Many of the visitors purchased a few coins. Money did not seem to be an object of consideration, as some of the collectors spent as much as Rupees 5,000 to buy a single copper coin. Coins worth two-and-a-half annas, one paisa, three-fourth of an anna, four annas, eight annas among others were valued to the extent of rupees 6,000 and above!
"Investment in this old coin is like a saving. This will not only help us to know history but also help in doubling our investment. Children should have a habit of collecting old coins," said Nityanandan.
"I am interested in collecting old coins. I have been collecting these old coins for the last 10 years now. I have a collection of silver coins dating back to 1862.This collection of coins is a hobby like other hobbies such as collecting stamps, antiques etcetra," said Ravichandran, a visitor to the exhibition.
The brain behind this exhibition, Palaniswamy said this was the 45 time he was holding the exhibition.
"Over three days, we expected around 30,000 visitors. The main focus of this exhibition was to create awareness among children and commoners about our ancient history," he said. By Jehova G
