NCB officials seize opium worth Rs 1.2 lakh

Chennai, Aug 4 (UNI) Officials of the South Zone unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized 4.030 kgs of opium, valued at Rs 1.2 lakh, and arrested one person at the Erode Railway Station yesterday.

NCB South Zone Director S Davison Devasirvatham, in a release here today said acting on specific information, the NCB sleuths lay in wait and arrested G Sakthivelu (45) at the exit point of the station when he arrived from Gorakhpur by Raptisagar Express, and effected the seizure.

The accused was remanded in judicial custody.

This was the first case of seizure of opium in the last two years and it was meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka, he said.
