Improved water storage witnessed in major reservoirs
New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) The combined storage in 81 reservoirs in the first month of water year has increased to 31 per cent of the designed capacity from 19 per cent on June 1.
The Central Water Commission which monitors these dams across the country including 36 reservoirs having hydro-power generation facilities generating over 60 MW of power have reported that the present storage accounted to 58 per cent of last year's storage of 94 per cent which was average of last ten years during June one to July 31. June one to May 30 is regarded as water year.
The storage capacity in eight basins -- Ganga, Indus, Sabarmati, Cauvery and neighbouring east flowing rivers, Mahanadi and neighbouring east flowing rivers, was better than the previous ten years, an official release said.
The CWC provides data to the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation on weekly basis for helping to evolve better crop strategies.
