19th state meet of CPM's Tripura unit begins

Agartala, Aug 4 (UNI) The three-day 19th state conference of CPI(M)'s Tripura unit commenced here today at Rabindra Bhavan.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat will address the party men in an open session this afternoon.

The party's spokesperson Goutam Das said here that altogether 515 party members from 18 different divisions would attend the conference including Politbureau member Sitaram Yechhuri and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

The conference was deferred for a day following the demise of party's former General Secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet.

A public rally was also cancelled which was supposed to be addressed by seven top leaders of the party including all the three chief ministers of Left ruled states-Kerela, West Bengal and Tripura.

'' We shall review the performance of CPI(M) in the past three and half years, alongwith holding discussions on recent political developments '' said partys secretary Mr Majumdar.

He added that cuurently the strength of members was around 70,000 in addition to 22 lakhs of other CPI(M) frontal organisations.

Meanwhile the CPI(M) workers paid homage to the departed Communist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet, taking out a silent procession through the main thoroughfares yesterday.
