Two cab drivers convicted in Australian tourist murder case

New Delhi, Aug 2 (UNI) A city court today convicted two cab drivers for killing a 69-year-old Australian tourist after raping her, near the IGI airport here, in March 2004.

Dawn Emily Griggs had arrived at the airport from Australia on March 17, 2004 and taken a pre-paid taxi from the airport to Brahma Kumari Center in Central Delhi. The hired taxi drivers-- Jyotish Prasad and Asish Kumar allegedly took her to an isolated place and attempted to rob her.

According to prosecution, when she protested, they allegedly raped her and stabbed repeatedly on her face and eyes with a screw driver. She died on the spot. Then the duo escaped with her travellers cheques, cash and other documents.

Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar, after the arguments of the prosecution and defence convicted both the accused under Sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt and committing robbery) and 201 (destruction of evidence ), 120 B of the IPC and adjourned the matter for pronouncement of sentence on August 4.
