Goa: Rough weather, fishermen warned
Panaji, Aug 2: In view of the stormy weather in Arabian Sea, the Meteorological department has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea, as it will be rough during the next 48 hours.
The bad weather, after the 45-day ban on marine fishing ended since last midnight, has disappointed the fishermen, who were prepared to launch their fishing operations from today.
There are as many 850 trawlers, 700 motor boats and 900 canoes registered with the fisheries department in Goa. Moreover, the workforce from neighbouring states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, who went home during the ban period, have also returned to Goa to join duties.
The ban on fishing during the monsoon season had been imposed in all maritime states as part of efforts at rejuvenating the fish resources in the mating season in a bid to prevent depletion of the catch.
Meanwhile, a Goan NGO Goenche Ramponkaraoncho Ekvott had demanded the government to enforce ban on fishing by trawlers and mechanised boats within five km radius along the coastline under the Marine Regulation Act.
