PM condoles death of Harkishen Singh Surjeet

Colombo, Aug 1 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today expressed deep shock and pain at the death of veteran Communist leader Harkishen Singh Surjeet describing him as a ''great Indian'' and an ''outstanding leader'' of the Communist movement in India.

The Prime Minister who is in the Sri Lankan capital to attend the 15th SAARC Summit, said in a condolence message that under his leadership, Communist movement in India came into the national mainstream and contributed to giving a progressive orienatation to the country's social and econoic policies.

''I always valued his advice and reached out to him for support and guidance in managing the UPA government, Dr Singh said.

Describing Mr Surjeet as a great political leader, a true patriot, a man committed to the welfare of the down-trodden, a great Indian and a dear friend, the Prime Minister said he greatly valued the Communist leader's friendship and guidance.

Mr Surjeet dedicated his entire life to the Communist movement in India and was one of its leading lights in Punjab, Dr Singh added.
