NE states to be provided with funds on 90:10 basis

Shillong, Jul 31 (UNI) The Union government will provide funds for the modification and implementation of Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) during the Eleventh Plan to the North-East states on 90:10 basis (Centre:State).

Official sources said here today that this step was to meet the special requirement of North Eastern states, to ensure equity while encouraging good practices, ownership and participation of rural communities and Panchayati Raj Institutions in the rural water supply programmes.

The Centre has approved the proposal for entering into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Governments of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim to ensure sustainability and full participation of the Panchayati Raj Institutions particularly in the operation and maintenance of the water supply projects, sources added.

The approval was for the modification in drinking water supply projects in rural clusters to be implemented with emphasis on sustainability of the projects, both in terms of quality and quantity sources said, adding the Centre will support all sustainability components with full assistance.
