GSU calls for 48-hour bandh at Garo Hills in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jul 31 (UNI) The Garo Students Union (GSU) has called for a 48-hour bandh in the Garo Hills in Meghalaya from August 4 in support of its charter of demands.

The strike, beginning at 0500 hrs, would cover all the three districts in the hills, union sources said.

The agitation would be staged to protest the state government's attempt to shift the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education office from Tura in the Garo Hills district, according to the sources.

The GSU leadership alleged that the present MPA government had failed to fulfil its demands, adding that no action had been taken against the police officials found guilty of firing on agitating students, claiming lives of nine people.

The leadership also demanded declaring September 30 a state holiday in memory of the incident.

It also called for a fresh probe into the Williamnagar firing incident, where five people were reportedly killed.
