Major haul of batteries meant for smuggling to Lanka seized
Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, July 28 (UNI) Police foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of batteries, walkie-talkie sets, fuse wire rolls, spark plugs and fishing nets to Sri Lanka, here today.
Police sources said during a routine surveillance along the coastal belts, a police team searched an abandoned plastic boat at Chinna Erwadi seashore, here. During the search, the police found 2,000 batteries, three walkie-talkie sets, 250 numbers of spark plugs, three rolls of fuse wire and 30 fishing nets, valued at Rs 4.5 lakh, concealed inside the boat for smuggling to Sri Lanka.
The consignment was seized along with the boat. Police suspect that the smugglers might have attempted to smuggle the consignment to the Sri Lankan Tamil rebels. Further investigations were on, police added.
