Army kills AKLF leader in encounter

Guwahati, Jul 28 (UNI) All Kamatapur Liberation Front (AKLF) leader Umananda Roy, involved in kidnapping of engineers and contractors of the Gayatri Constructions, was gunned down last night by Army troops following a fierce encounter.

A joint operation by the Double First Brigade along with the police, led by Col Hitesh Bhalla, was launched in the Basugaon area in Chirang last night.

Roy after being chased by the security forces for some time, was challenged by them at Basugaon. In a bid to escape, he lobbed grenades at the security forces.

In the fierce encounter that ensued the terrorist was gunned down, Army source said.

Roy was involved in a number of cases like killing of Hindi- speaking people, kidnapping of a businessman in Chirang in 2006 and abduction of engineers and contractors of Gayatri Constructions.
