Unique Cornea transplant surgery performed successfully
Sambalpur, Jul 26 (UNI) The opthalmologists at the VSS Medical College and Hospital have successfully performed a unique eye surgery of transplanting the cornea of an accident victim on a 70-year-old man.
Hospital sources said here today one Rupadhar Dhurua of Khetrajpur met with an accident, leading to severe injury to his left eye.
When all efforts to treat the injured eye failed, the doctors decided to remove it. However, during the operation, they found the cornea in a perfect condition, whereas the innermost portion of the eye had been totally damaged.
The doctors then decided to transplant the cornea of Rupadhar on 70-year-old Brahma Nayak of Deogarh who was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The corneal transplant was successfully conducted yesterday and both the patients are in good health, Opthamology Associate Professor of VSS Medical College and Hospital Dr Guna Sagar Das said.
Dr Das described the operation as an unprecedented case in the history of ophthalmology.
