MGR, Anna statues desecrated in Karaikudi
Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, Jul 26 (UNI) Tension gripped this heritage town following the desecration of the statues of Dravidian stalwarts and former Chief Ministers C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran at Chekkalai road here today.
Police sources said some miscreants defaced the cement statues of the two leaders. Noticing this, over 200 AIADMK cadres assembled near the statues and obstructed vehicular movement, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
Party Election Wing Joint Secretary and former Minister Nainar Nagendran rushed to the spot and inquired about the incident. The AIADMK workers also took out a procession from MGR statue to the Periyar Statue in that area.
A majority of the shops downed their shutters, sensing trouble.
A large number of policemen were deployed to defuse the tense situation. On the intervention of the police, the AIADMK men withdrew their road blockade.
Meanwhile, police claimed that they secured two persons, including a BJP worker, in connection with the desecration. The duo were identified as Sivalingam (38) of the BJP and Raman (36), who were suspected to be involved in the offence in an inebriated condition.
