Lifer for 4 Al Uma activists confirmed
Chennai, Jul 24 (UNI) Madras High Court today confirmed the life sentence awarded by a lower court to four Al Uma activists in a double murder case.
A Division Bench comprising Mr Justice D Murugesan and Mr Justice S Palanivel confirmed the sentence while dismissing an appeal filed by the four convicts challenging the Nagapattinam District sessions Court Order sentencing them to life imprisonment.
The Bench said the lower court had rightly awarded them life sentence after the prosecution proved the case beyond any reasonable doubt.
The convicts could not be shown any leniency as they committed a grave offence by committing the double murder in a brutal manner.
The prosecution case was that in 1996, the four convicts, hailing from Coimbatore, visited Nagapattinam to seek medical assistance from a Muslim priest.
After a wordy duel, they murdered the priest, Alim and his wife Sahira, who came to the rescue of her husband.
The Sessions Court in Nagapattinam sentenced them to life in 2001 after holding the prosecution proved the case beyond any doubt.
