A daily glass of orange juice can increase diabetes risk

London, July 24 : Just one glass of tangy orange juice a day can increase your chances of developing diabetes, a new study has found.

The study's researchers found that women who drink a glass of fruit juice every morning are 18 per cent more likely to get type two diabetes.

It's not yet known if men face the same risk as the results came from a study only involving 70,000 female nurses.

Yet researchers found eating whole fruits instead actually reduced the risk of diabetes.

Experts believe the natural sugars in juice are absorbed too rapidly in the stomach, causing a surge in blood sugar levels.

This does not apply to solid fruit as the fibre slows its digestion.

The study has been published in the journal Diabetes Care.
