CPI(M) observes shutdown in Kannur

Kannur, Jul 24 (UNI) A shutdown was observed in Thalassery today following a call given by the CPI(M) in protest against the killing of a party activist yesterday.

No untoward incident was reported from the area, police said.

CPI(M) activist U K Saleem (32) of Kidarukunnu at New Mahe was killed allegedly by the National Development Front (NDF) activists following an altercation.

A ten-member gang had attacked Saleem with swords and iron rods and he succumbed to his injuries at Thalassery Cooperative Hospital.

Another CPI(M) worker K Nafnas (20) was injured on his head in a stone pelting incident and was admitted at Thalassey Cooperative Hospital.

In an apparent retaliation, suspected CPI(M) activists attacked NDF activist Nowshad (25) of Punnol. He suffered stab injuries on his stomach and was admitted to Thalassery Indira Gandhi Hospital. The house of Mehroof, an NDF activist, was ransacked by a CPI(M) group early this morning.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the trouble-torn areas.
